Third-quarter 2026 US auto sales data show the Detroit big three at a record low 36% share, down from 45% a decade ago, as hybrid sales surge. GM makes one hybrid, the Corvette, Ford offers two, and Chrysler none, while Kia, Hyundai, Toyota and Honda ride the boom. Detroit also let the minivan category it invented in 1984 go to Toyota, Honda and Kia. The discussion has moved from the record-low share to GM's response: it plans hybrid versions of the Chevy Traverse, Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia at a Michigan plant. Whether that closes the gap remains open.
