A Texas jury convicted James Elmore of felony manslaughter and use of a deadly weapon on September 25 in the 1984 death of 16-year-old Laura Miller. Elmore had been indicted in the spring, and the case now also includes a tampering with evidence charge for moving Audrey Lee Cook's body. The conviction rests on a recorded confession; Elmore's lawyers argued he fabricated it for reward money, while prosecutors said he knew details that were never public. Elmore also indicated he worked with another person, Clyde Hedrick, who later died in a hospital after removing his breathing tube.
