On October 12, French supermarkets reported a cyberattack that remotely defrosted fridges in hundreds of stores, initially hitting up to 200 Intermarché outlets. Reporting the next day said at least 500 stores were affected, with fridges at about 150 reaching 122 degrees Fahrenheit for nearly six hours. By October 14, the count had risen to about 700 locations, with losses in the tens of millions of euros a day, and hackers had raised temperatures to as high as 50 degrees Celsius, causing fires and spoiling food. The French finance minister calls the attack a wake-up call, while the manufacturer says newer models were unaffected. No operator has said how the access was obtained.
