Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wayne Mullen announced on September 1 that ICE arrested over 2,000 immigrants across New York between July 27 and August 29 in Operation Rotten Apple. Mullen said the operation proceeded without help from Mayor Zoran Mamdani or Governor Kathy Hochul, and that more federal agents are coming to New York. Reporting since has established that Mamdani called Mullen to try to get a person released back into the community, and Mullen says the Dominican national arrested in New York had three years of extensive criminal activity. What the call produced, and how the city and state are responding, remains open.
